If You Don't Like Something, Change It.
For several years I have advocated for more public art in Fort Wayne, IN. In previous posts I have pointed out the public art that fills destination cities & towns, always emphasizing the economic impact the arts have on other communities.
I have visited numerous communities where corporations and governments invest heavily in the arts, and it is my goal to prove it can be done in Fort Wayne, IN.
Art This Way is a grassroots organization working to bring more public art into Fort Wayne, IN. What began as a long conversation between artists has grown into a movement. We have joined with sponsors the Downtown Economic Improvement District, Greater Fort Wayne, Inc., and The University of Saint Francis School of Creative Arts to create a comprehensive mural program. The organization is currently focused on alley activation. Over fifteen property owners within a two block area of downtown Fort Wayne have signed agreements to participate in the program. Over $50,000 in funds have been raised for this initial phase of the project.
In September of 2017 the Art This Way organization held the Art This Way Art Crawl to raise funds and awareness about this mural and art installation program. This successful event paired local artists with live bands and local restaurants for a one-of-a-kind speakeasy art crawl through downtown. Art This Way will host this event again in 2018.
The first three Artist Calls for Entry are going to be released in early October of 2017, & we hope to install these three murals (weather permitting) in the spring of 2018. These photos are two of the three walls that will be addressed in the first phase.
These public art installations were made possible because of community support, volunteers and local sponsors! Public art engenders a distinct identity, fosters pride of place & generates economic growth, and Art This Way is working to bring more public art to Fort Wayne. Stay tuned as this mural program continues to gain momentum and bring positive change to our city!
